The divorce process is initiated through what’s called a petition. A petition is like a lawsuit, it’s a formal document that’s filed with the clerk of the court that starts the divorce process. One of the parties, either the husband or the wife files for divorce against the other and starts the process in order to get it into the court system. From there, the parties then try to work out their differences at a mediation in order to actually get divorced.
